Balance bikes are a fantastic way to get your child started with their lifelong love affair with bikes. Balance bikes are designed to get children used to riding by propelling themselves with their legs and learning how to balance. There are no pedals on balance bikes.
There’s no need for stabilisers with a balance bike, the idea is that children will learn to balance as they go, and once they’re ready for a bike with pedals, it will make things easier to transition. Children can start riding balance bikes from around 18 months and to get started, it’s wise to have them be able to touch the floor with both feet when sat on the saddle.
With bikes in stock from
Raleigh,
Frog and
Ridgeback, we have plenty of choice available. Some models will come with brakes, some with one brake, or none at all. Most children will tend to use their feet to slow down and pick up speed, having a brake may be a good idea to get them used to it before moving to a pedal bike, but it’s not necessary. Weight is likely the most important factor, make sure you choose a bike they will be able to manage.
